Teaching in China - Katy Moris

Teaching has been fantastic, I've taught in English schools but teaching in China really is an eye opener! All the kids are so eager to learn and you get treated like a film star: autographs, fan clubs and pictures are twenty -four- seven in China! The only problem I've had is when I let the children choose their own names, I mean how do you tell a fourteen year old that yoghurt isn't a brilliant choice of name, when they've said so innocently "but I like yoghurt!"

My host family has been brilliant and they really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. The little boy in my home, who is as cute as pie, spent countless hours teaching me the right pronunciation to Chinese words and occasionally making me repeat words that were not entirely good, much to his mothers distaste and the grandmothers amusement! The weirdest thing was having a real nosey neighbour, it seems everyone knows everyone's business and after two weeks I was properly introduced to the neighbour who decided that my hair was dyed because my skin is so white, that my sister was thinner than me and that I clearly wasn't eating enough, causing the grandmother to give me larger portions of rice at mealtimes and say "Kitty!" and then tapping the bowl before dropping the chosen food into it!
