Teaching Volunteer Stories, China

Teaching in China - Michiel Kemeling
China. Land of the Great Wall. Land of the wise, of the inventions. Land with 5000 years of history filled with dynasties and their emperors. All I knew of China is what I saw in 'Crouching tiger, hidden dragon' and Bruce Lee movies. There I went, a Dutch guy on his way to China, land of Kung Fu and the Green Destiny.

Teaching in China - Shaun Passey
I am currently doing a teaching placement here in the bustling metropolis that is Shanghai. I know it's the biggest cliché ever but I can honestly say that it is an experience quite out of this world. I'm teaching a wide range of students from pre-junior (11-12 year olds) to junior two students (14-15 year olds). Their level of spoken English exceeded my expectations so settling in was much easier than anticipated.

Teaching in China - Helen Willoughby
I found PA web site through a "Gap Year for Adults" search and was a little concerned when it was suggested that my security details were left with my parents! It's true that my fellow volunteers are all aged between 18 and 22, but they've been great. It's been a good support to be able to travel together and meet up at local coffee shops. They're not big on Pubs in Wujiang.

Teaching in China - Katy Moris
Teaching has been fantastic, I've taught in English schools but teaching in China really is an eye opener! All the kids are so eager to learn and you get treated like a film star: autographs, fan clubs and pictures are twenty -four- seven in China! The only problem I've had is when I let the children choose their own names, I mean how do you tell a fourteen year old that yoghurt isn't a brilliant choice of name, when they've said so innocently "but I like yoghurt!"
